We are on a mission to save our children. Our focus is a high quality, transformational experience that combines human development and athletics. On behalf of Shoot for the Stars, we invite you to sponsor a deserving student for our 2018 Boys & Girls Basketball Camp.
Your support will play a vital role in helping us provide valuable basketball instruction to students, both boys and girls, from the ages of 8 to 18 in the surrounding areas. As you know, camps are very expensive and not all parents can afford this opportunity. Inner city youth will receive basketball instruction that would otherwise be inaccessible. In conjunction with the basketball training, campers will also be exposed to an effective human development program. Human development includes; decision making, refusal skills, teaming, and an academic action plan.
About Our Program:
We are devoted to making a difference in the lives of young people. While this will be our third year of operation as a basketball camp, “Shoot for the Stars” collectively represents more than 40 years of experience teaching, mentoring and coaching students to become solid athletes, but more importantly helping them develop into successful, productive adults.
Shoot for the Stars has been educating male and female students since 1980, and since 2011, has been a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The coaching staff consists of retired educators, coaches and professional athletes, committed to using athletics as a socialization mechanism.
The Shoot for the Stars founders are NBA Hall of Famer Wali Jones, and Ken Hamilton, who retired as the all-time wins leader at Benjamin Franklin High School basketball coach.
Benefits Of Our Research-Based Approach
Studies have proven there is a direct correlation between academic success and involvement in sports. Students receive an opportunity for remediation, enrichment and acceleration. Students have more freedom to digress from a prescribed curriculum, so they can study both human development and athletics.
Positive mentorships are developed between students and faculty.
Students are a part of a safe, caring environment with positive adult engagement. Students develop healthy peer relationships.
Students develop time management skills because of the focus on combining human development and athletics. Students develop cooperation and team-work skills.
Our Camp Structure:
These camps will be one-week sessions for two weeks, Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm. Current and former high school and college coaches provide camp instruction. The camps will be held at School for the Future , 4021 Parkside Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
